UPI New Rules Update

UPI New Rules Update From 1st August: Know what’s going to Change

UPI New Rules Update : India’s most popular and trusted payment system, UPI (Unified Payments Interface), is about to undergo a major transformation starting 1st August 2025.

From balance checks to auto-pay schedules, India’s digital payment backbone is getting key changes—here’s how it impacts your daily transactions.

What is UPI ?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an Indian instant payment system as well as protocol developed by the National Payments Corporation of India in 2016.

The interface facilitates inter-bank peer-to-peer and person-to-merchant transactions.

With new guidelines announced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the changes are meant to improve system efficiency, prevent service crashes, and offer better security for users.

Whether you use Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM, these rules will change how you interact with your UPI apps every day. Let’s break it down in simple terms:

Why the Big Change in UPI?

UPI has become India’s digital lifeline—handling over 85% of the country’s digital payments. But recent technical issues and major service outages disrupted payments for millions of users.

To prevent these problems in the future, NPCI has introduced smart usage caps and timing restrictions. These tweaks are designed to reduce server overload and improve response time, especially during peak usage.

Let’s see major changes in UPI New Rules Update :

1. New Limit: Only 50 Balance Checks Per Day, Per App

  • Earlier, users could check their bank balance on UPI unlimited times. But frequent balance inquiries create heavy traffic on bank servers.
  • Now, this will be capped at 50 balance checks per app, per day.
  • Plus, after every transaction, your updated balance will be shown automatically, saving you the extra step.

Why it matters: This change will cut down unnecessary system load and reduce app lag, especially during busy hours.

2. Linked Bank Account View Limited to 25 Times Daily

  • Every time you open your app to check which accounts are linked, the system uses something called an API call. These calls overload the network when done excessively.
  • Henceforth, users can only check their linked accounts 25 times per app per day. Also, failed attempts won’t be auto-retried by the app.

Why it matters: Prevents spamming the network and keeps things running smoother for everyone.

3. Auto-Payments Restricted to Off-Peak Hours

  • Set up an auto-debit for your EMIs, subscriptions, or recurring fund transfers? These will now be processed only during low-traffic hours.

New auto-pay processing windows:

  • Before 10:00 AM
  • 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
  • After 9:30 PM

Each auto-pay request will have a maximum of 4 attempts in case it fails the first time.

Why it matters: By avoiding peak time congestion, your scheduled payments will have higher success rates and fewer delays.

4. Transaction Status Checks Capped & Spaced Out

  • Pending payment? You can now check its status only 3 times per transaction, and each check must be at least 90 seconds apart.
  • Also, payment reversals—when you try to cancel or retrieve funds—are now limited to: 10 requests per month. Out of these, only 5 can be initiated by the sender

Why it matters: Reduces server overload and limits misuse of reversal systems.

5. New Security Step: See Receiver’s Bank Name Before Paying

  • Before you complete a UPI transfer, your app must show the recipient’s registered bank name.
  • This is a simple but powerful way to double-check you’re paying the right person.

Why it matters: This will cut down on fraud and reduce accidental transfers to the wrong person.
