What is the context of Delhi Earthquake News ?
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Afghanistan’s mountainous Hindu Kush region late on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake hit at 19:17:34 UTC (12:47 am IST on September 1). This earthquake also felt in Delhi – NCR.
Epicentre Details of Afghanistan and Delhi Earthquake
The epicentre was located 27 kilometres east-northeast of Jalalabad, one of Afghanistan’s largest cities near the Pakistan border.
The quake struck at a shallow depth of just 8 kilometres, intensifying its impact in surrounding districts.

Tremors Across Borders : Delhi Earthquake
Residents in eastern Afghanistan, northwestern Pakistan and Indian Capital region also reported strong shaking.
While no immediate casualties or damage reports were confirmed, experts warned that the shallow depth made nearby populations vulnerable.
High-Risk Seismic Zone of Afghanistan
The Hindu Kush region sits at the junction of The Indian, Eurasian, and Arabian plates are all converging in this region, leading to intense geological activity.
The Pamir-Hindu Kush seismic zone which caused Delhi Earthquake
One of the most seismically active areas in the world is located directly beneath the Hindu Kush mountain range in northeastern Afghanistan.
This region is notorious for its deep-focus earthquakes, occurring at depths of 70 to 300 km.
The deep seismic activity is particularly complex. Some studies suggest it’s caused by the subduction of a single, contorted slab of Indian lithosphere.
Other models propose two separate slabs of continental lithosphere subducting in opposite directions beneath the Hindu Kush and Pamir Mountains.

Past Deadly Quakes in Afghanistan
Afghanistan has faced devastating earthquakes in the past. In June 2022, a 5.9-magnitude quake in Paktika province killed over 1,000 people.
A 7.5-magnitude tremor in October 2015 left nearly 400 people dead across Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Monitoring Aftershocks of Afghanistan and Delhi Earthquake
Authorities are monitoring for potential aftershocks, which often follow strong tremors.
Rescue teams and local agencies are on alert, though access to remote areas remains a challenge.
This latest quake underscores the persistent threat of seismic disasters in the Hindu Kush, where millions live in quake-prone zones without adequate preparedness measures.
